Five bold horses to me my friend Lucifer gave
And a ring made of gold with a ruby inside,
So that I could explore the depth of the cave
And rise up to the heavenly face of the sky.
Horses snored and lured me out into space,
With swift gallop devouring miles in a wink,
And I knew that for me smiling sun gently raise
Shining up like a ruby on my golden ring.
Many days, many nights inevitably passed,
I was wandering there with knowing no end,
I was laughing with stallions ravishing blast
And the ring that incessantly glowed on my hand.
On the peak of a mind there was madness and snow,
I directed my horses to heights of the space
And as laughingly stars in the darkness would glow,
I saw there a maiden with sorrowful face.
In sweet voice you could hear the sound of a string
And the question was quickly confused with reply
And I gave to the maiden my precious ring
For her eyes and her plaits that so heavenly shine.
And then Lucifer opened the gates to the dark,
He was roaring with laughter and pale with despise,
One more horse he gave me with an ominous spark
With Despair, its name, written down in his eyes.
